OR Hippotherapy AND “Older Adults” OR elderly.

The contributions of horse-assisted therapy to gerontology: a systematic review

Abstract: To carry out a systematic review regarding to the contributions of equine-assisted therapy for the older adults. A systematic review using the nine steps of the Methodi Ordinatio methodology. The databases analyzed were Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed, Bireme and Science Direct the descriptors were: “Equine-Assisted Therapy” OR Hippotherapy AND “Older Adults” OR elderly. Initially, 184 publications were found, however, after excluding searches not relevant to the topic, 21 productions were selected. There was growth in national research in the last decade, intertwining several areas of knowledge between gerontology and health in the recovery of postural instability and in the cognitive aspect in the reduction of stress, agitation and irritability resulting from some geriatric syndromes and stroke sequelae. The applicability of horse therapy in the elderly population has promising effects, however it is understood that it is an emerging field for interventionist studies with robust methodologies.
